Can you explain this?

So last night we noticed that the red berries outside our hotel room appeared white. There's an intense yellow street light in the area. We saw an exhibit at a museum that had the same effect. Everything appears black and white.

I've been reading about color subtraction which make sense but I figure with this idea anything yellow will be very intense. When I put yellow flowers in the light they look white. Very interesting.
